Queen's Gallery

The Queen's Gallery is an art museum in Edinburgh's Old Town housed in a converted Gothic church that opened to the public in 2002. The building showcases selected works from the Royal Collection, including paintings, sculptures, and decorative objects displayed in intimate galleries with preserved architectural details.

The building began as Holyrood Free Church, constructed between 1846 and 1850 with Gothic Revival architecture by a prominent Edinburgh architect. It underwent significant transformation in the late 1990s and early 2000s to become an exhibition space for royal artworks, taking on its new role while keeping its original stone walls and windows.

The gallery presents rotating exhibitions featuring paintings, rare furniture, and decorative arts that highlight the Royal Collection's extensive holdings.

The museum sits directly next to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, making it convenient to visit both in a single trip through the historic district. Visitors should allow 1 to 2 hours to see the current exhibition, and the space is accessible with elevators and facilities for those with movement difficulties.

The gallery shares its space with a connected neo-Jacobean school building from the 1800s, creating an unusual combination of two distinct architectural styles under one roof. This dual-building structure reflects the site's generous benefactor Elizabeth Gordon, Duchess of Gordon, whose funding made the entire transformation possible.
