Das historische Zentrum umfasst 209 Kolonialgebäude aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, die mit traditionellen Stampflehm- und Flechtwerkstechniken errichtet wurden.
Die Siedlung begann 1561, als der portugiesische Entdecker Manuel Fernandes Ramos während seiner Goldsuche in dieser Region einen Stützpunkt errichtete.
Die Passionsspiele während der Karwoche ziehen 35.000 Besucher in das historische Zentrum und sind eine der größten religiösen Aufführungen Brasiliens.
Die Stadtverwaltung investierte eine Million Reais in Erhaltungsprojekte, einschließlich der Restaurierungen des Anhanguera Museums und der Monsignor Paulo Florêncio Villa.
Das 1999 gegründete Kunsthandwerkschulprojekt bildet junge Menschen in historischen Bautechniken aus, um die Kolonialgebäude zu erhalten.
