Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário, matriz de Olhão

Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário is the main parish church in Olhão, a port town in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. The building features white-painted walls and a distinctive bell tower rising above the central square, with its entrance facing the main plaza.

Construction began in 1698 and continued until 1715, with support coming from local fishing families who helped shape the project. It became the first permanent stone structure to rise in Olhão, marking a turning point in the town's development from a simple maritime settlement.

The church holds a 17th-century statue of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and displays traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles throughout its interior spaces. Visitors walking through notice how the tilework covers walls and corners, creating a distinctly Portuguese religious atmosphere.

The church is open to visitors during regular daytime hours, with the main entrance on the front plaza and a rear chapel accessible from behind. Plan your visit for morning or early afternoon to avoid crowds and have time to view the interior details comfortably.

White storks regularly nest and rest on the church's high points, particularly on the bell tower and roof edges. Their presence brings distinctive sounds across the square, especially during nesting season when they create their characteristic loud clicking calls.
